In my time working at Lowe’s Home Improvement, I was given the runway to help frame and launch a new program; Lowe’s Accessible Home, later changed to Lowe’s Livable Home the year later.

Along with my Concept Design team, I helped to define the overarching vision and scope of what “accessibility” means for Lowe’s. In light of increases to aging in place, the wellness economy and more, we knew there needed to be a response. And Lowe’s was well suited to offer whole-home solutions that build DIY skills.

Scope of Strategy

  • What does Accessible mean? Who is the customer? What are their needs?

  • What is the Lowe’s product and service response?

  • What is our vision of the program? Value prop, metrics, etc.

  • What does a near term in-store presentation look like?

Defining Accessibility

This project was originally prompted by the growing trend of “Aging in Place.” However, it was important to start with a more universal and holistic strategic definition for the program, that wouldn’t risk pigeon-holing the experience. The concept of accessibility comes from principles in Universal Design: Ensuring your home services the needs of all who live in it. Period.
